Melbourne Cup 1934
There were 3 categories of horses :
Category One: Horses trained at Moorefield, who won the Melbourne Cup – Hiraji in 1947.
Category Two : Horses who won at Moorefield, and won a Melbourne Cup –Westcourt 1917, Windbag 1925, and Foxzami in 1949.
Category Three : Horses who ran at Moorefield without winning , and won the Melbourne Cup –Nightmarch 1929, Old Rowley in 1940, Russia 1946, Hiraji 1947 and Rimfire 1948.
Hiraji’s jockey, Jack Purtell died in March 2017 aged 95 . On the Friday Oct 7 2016 I located Jack Purtell on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland. A copy of my book was forwarded to him in early Nov 2016.
Some Moorefield Jockeys still alive today:
Ray Selkrig, Jack Waterhouse, Frank (Johnny ) Hudson, Cliff Clare (rode in barrier trials) and Noel Best.
(Edgar Britt died on 28 Jan 2017 aged 103)
