Horse Shoe Found on the Moorefield Estate , Kogarah 61 Years After Moorefield Racecourse Closed.
Moorefield Racecourse ceased race meetings on July 14, 1951; however the course stayed open for barrier trials until mid-1955.
Residents of the Estate, who were digging near their swimming pool, which is under construction, found the silver horse shoe on Sunday April 24 , 2016.
This is a timely find, as I plan to soon launch my history of Moorefield Racecourse (1888-1951). Anne’s research has taken over 20 years.
Mr A. T McLauchlan leased the Brighton Hotel from 1932 to 1951. Recently, I connected with members of the McLauchlan family. An elderly gentleman, from Lachal Street on the Moorefield Estate, yesterday gave me some old newspaper articles from 1957. Information is still coming to light at the 11th hour, so to speak.
The launch date of July 14, 2016 is significant, as it is 65 years to the day of the last race meeting. A hard copy will be launched on October 13, 2016.
The horse shoe is expected to be framed, after my electronic book is launched. It will then sit alongside a photograph of Moorefield Racecourse- a timely reminder of our past history.
