Henry Field,  who is not a relative , believes that  “ Australia should  play to its strengths  and concentrate  on sprinters  rather than worry  about trying to improve  its staying ranks .”

I met Henry at the 2023 Golden Slipper Breakfast at Rosehill Racecourse, and told him of my Moorefield Racecourse, Kogarah book.

Henry has defended the nation’s breeding industry after a Melbourne Cup wipe out from Australian born stayers, Vow and Declare (winner of the Melbourne Cup in 2019) and Right You Are.

Field said that “sprinters and two year old racing are the corner of our breeding industry. We should be proud of what we are good at, rather than try to be something we are not. “He said that “wherever he travelled around the world Australian racing was acknowledged as the sprinting powerhouse. “

Field said that “the nation’s two year old racing was held in the same renown as our sprinters on the world stage.  There is absolutely no doubt that whether it is Japan, Europe or America they know that our sprinters are the best in the world“

Newgate in the Upper Hunter Valley is home   to 14 of the nation’s best stallions, who stand at fees from   $11,000 to $275,000. They include Extreme Choice, Capitalist, Stay Inside and the northern hemisphere, State of Rest.

Field’s Newgate colours of red, yellow stars, halved sleeves and red cap are synonymous with race success these days. It was reported in the Daily Telegraph that Henry Field recently attended the broodmare sales in Kentucky, USA.  A school friend’s nephew, Craig runs a horse stud in Kentucky. He completed some work experience at Segenhoe in the Hunter Valley, before going to the USA to work in the racing industry. One day I will make the Kentucky Derby!
