I attended this race meeting at Randwick Racecourse with 2 friends, Marianthe and Athena. We had a great day and managed to back a few winners. Race 8 was the Schweppes All Aged Stakes-1400 metres. It is of interest to read about the background to this race.
The earliest running of this race with the conditions of the All Aged Stakes was the All Aged Selling Stakes in 1864. A horse called Wonder took the race with jockey J. Driscoll aboard.
Jim Pike, Phar Lap’s jockey holds the race record with 7 wins in the All Aged Stakes-Amounis (1930), Winooka (1933) , Chatham (1934) and Peter Pan (1935).
The All Aged Stakes can be compared with the Doncaster. Winners of both these races include Briseis (1876) , Winooka (1933) Chatham(1934) , Tobin Bronze (1967), Tontonan (1974) , Sunline (2002) and Private Steer (2004).
